Lovely food in the cafe

I haven't lived in Alfreton long and I stumbled upon this little gem of a cafe and had to share! I went for a homemade cheese and onion pie and chips (because, why not?) and it was absolutely spot-on. You could tell it hadn’t just been pulled out of a freezer — it was fresh, full of flavour, the crust was perfection, and the chips were lovely too. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The young man who took our order couldn't do enough to help us and happily went to get us more vinegar and mayonnaise. As for the prices — seriously, such good value! For the quality of the food, you’d expect to pay more, but this place clearly focuses on making good food accessible. It felt like eating at a friend’s house where they actually know how to cook. Honestly, it’s one of those places that makes you want to become a regular. Great food, nice atmosphere, and doesn’t break the bank. What more could you want?

Nice but not good

We held our wedding reception at Genesis in the marquee room . Whilst the room was lovely there was no heating on as it was very cold and most who were at our reception had to sit with coats on . We had to put tables out ourselves, we were also told that we could come back the next day to clear our things away as no one was in there . We arrived to get our things and everything had been chucked in boxes and moved into the small bar area . There was a class on in the room and everything had been moved and we didn’t know where anything was .. I wouldn’t recommend..

Poor football children's party

Poor service, I booked a children’s football party, to which I received no party host, a football goal and ball to entertain the part for an hour, with no mini games, cones etc, to then have food arrive burnt, before the ice cream came out the guests was leaving and party was over and I hadn’t at this point had the knife to cut the cake which both the ice cream and cake had been requested several times, I paid in full asked to speak to management to say I would get a phone call Monday and then have to ring up on Wednesday to speak to someone! Their resolution is for me to have a free game of bowling, I basically paid £9.95 a head to rent a hall out with a football goal and ball and have burnt pizza and chips which on the board was £4.99 so additional £5 a head to rent a sports hall with no host or games. I have also attached pictures of the room we was in walls not even painted, I had provided the football party bags etc if not nothing was football related, any events place I have hired have always had happy birthday sign as a standard not here!

Appalling service

Appalling night at bowling saturday 7th january we was a family of 2 adults 4 children between the ages of 9 and 17 we was so disappointed we payed for 2 hours, the barries didnt work as one side has snapped and a few other barriers were also snapped or bent ,halfway through game 1 a ball got stuck then jumped to the next player ,when it happened again i went to the desk to complain , there was no one there waited a minute for someone to come and help one of the girls then restarted that go, 10 mins past and was ok then said 2 minutes remaining we had only been here an hour , after it then glitching jumping to the next players again I went to complain no one there again and the girl was just sat there on her phone, she did something on the computer and we managed to bowl again , 5 mins later it happened again this time the family next to us had the same problem as well. So we both went and complained , and again she was sat in the back on her phone , she then got another girl to come and help this time changing us to another lane and low and behold it kept happening again we was ready to leave by this time 10 mins after only managing to get to bowl 7 times the time ran out , so in total we didn't even manage to play 2 full games because of all of the waiting around for them to sort it. Onto the drinks, the Pepsi stopped working and I ordered 4 fruit shoots which was all crushed in the same place and tasted like normal cordial so was probably re used and had cordial added , Toilets were absoloutly disgusting, I walked in and walked back out looks like they haven't been cleaned in a while and smelt revolting We will not be coming back here

Please book elsewhere to avoid disappointment

I would absolutely NOT recommend making a booking with this centre. I made a booking for 5pm on New Year’s Eve and paid in full nearly 2 months prior, at the time of booking I provided my phone number and email address. We arrived at the centre on New Year’s Eve to find a sign on the door stating it was closed due to staff illness. I didn’t receive a call or even an email to notify me of closure which would of allowed me time to make alternative arrangements unfortunately like other families we were stood outside a closed centre with very upset children and at that point everywhere else was fully booked which left us without plans. The centre has since deleted posts which I and other upset customers shared our poor experience! I have spoke with a manager, Emma who informed me I will receive a refund (which goes without saying) but rather than be met with compassion Emma was hostile and at several points within our conversation shouted over me and informed me that she had only just got back from annual leave (not sure why that holds any relevance to my complaint). Emma stated that the centre is ran with 6 members of staff who were all struck down with covid - whether this is true or not I’m sure 1 member of staff could of worked from home and emailed paying customers… also just to note the centre is open only 3 days later so if the staff had been struck down with covid they appear to have recovered very quickly!!! Emma did offer a free bowling session after much argument, but after thought we will not be taking Emma up on this offer as we would not feel comfortable at centre as I can only imagine how we would be treated in person based on the way I was spoken to on the phone. Again I wouldn’t recommend booking anything with this centre due to how unreliable they are, their communication is non existent and management are very rude I would hate for another family to face disappointment especially on a special occasion.

Disappointing 21st birthday party

I had my 21st birthday party in the marquee room at the Genesis centre, can’t fault the room itself but the organisation and the way I was made to feel on a special occasion and the aftermath of how it has been handled has not been a good experience. I have tried to handle my complaint in an appropriate and professional way privately, which has just been dismissed by the managing director of the venue which I find appalling, which is why I have come to the decision to post publicly about this. This included a staff member making my party guests feel very uncomfortable during my party and have had multiple people make feedback regarding the issue, which the Genesis centre have not regarded as being a serious issue in the slightest way possible. Do not recommend to have your party here with the way the management have conducted themselves regarding a very serious issue during my event and disregarding my feedback. Will not be visiting again or recommending to anyone.
