Excellent place to photograph hummingbirds including the magnificent spatula tail! This hard working woman is building an incredible habitat for birds in Northern Peru. You will not be disappointed in the numbers or varieties of birds at this location.
I highly recommend! What Sadit is doing here is amazing. She has completely taken responsibility to caretake this sacred land and rejuvinate the home of the unique Spatuletail Hummingbird. Unfortunately it is now an endangered species. In this local area, Sadit is working hard to help their numbers to rise and supporting this reserve is doing your part to help too, and of course, you get to see these most beautiful and rare birds! I had a really wonderful time and feel so blessed to have seen 3 of the birds in our viewing. Sadit also speaks English which is a bonus because not many people in this small town do.
Soooooo beautiful 😍 great place to see several species of hummingbirds. They have created a haven. The passion is clear and present to see. Great knowledge 👏
We spent two mornings at the Refugio, which is just outside the small town of Cocachimba in Peru. The setting is great for viewing several different bird species including Tanagers and, most importantly, hummingbirds. The rare Marvelous Spatuletail is readily seen are the feeders and in the surrounding vegetation. When we were there in mid-September we saw at least half-a-dozen individuals including several males in their full breeding plumage. The photo opportunities are excellent!
If you have never seen the Marvelous Spatuletail, then you should definitely visit this little hummingbird reserve. There are only a few places on the planet where this bird can reliably be observed, and (to my delight) this reserve has apparently joined that very short list. I don’t want to over-promise (maybe I got lucky on the one visit that I made?), but you will not regret seeing this hummingbird. The male has a pair of utterly preposterous tail feathers that just give it even more character than the average hummer, because even when he perches, the tail feathers keep dancing. (Apparently females find this quite fetching).
Anyway, the family who run the place built the viewing station and planted the garden in 2020, while tourists were scarce. They have done a great job, and I hope that they can share this bird with anyone visiting Gocta.
(For the bird nerds, they also seem to reliably get the grey-chinned hermit).
This is a great place to thse beautiful rare hummingbirds! The small sanctuary has a nice small seating area for up close viewing of wild hummingbirds and other native birds, including the Marvelous spatuletail (colibrí con cola espatula).
We saw four of the spatula-tailed hummingbirds and many other species. In October 2023, it cost us 20 soles per person (about $5) and was well worth it. We did not use the swimming hole but it looked very nice.
Definitely check this out if you're in Cocachimba. The best time to see the hummingbirds is in the evening, so plan on going after 5pm.
