Kein Muss.
As I mentioned before, this is often confused with Stahleck Castle, the youth hostel above Bacharach. This is a ruin about 2 miles from the Bacharach train station, up the Steeg road which is the main road going inland from Bacarach. For directions, Google Maps is good. Most of the hiking websites include this with a much longer hike in the area that also includes Stahleck.
It is a pleasant walk along the street and then eventually a short path thru the woods. You canot see the ruin until you are right next to it. The pictures showning the entire castle are from an adjacent hill. There was only one other person there when I visited, someone who was taking the longer hike.
I love ruined castles better than intact ones and especialy ones where there are few visitors. It was only on my 6th visit to Bacharach that I visited the ruin.
All the English language reviews are for Burg StahlECK, the castle above town that s a youth hostel. This listing is for Burg StahlBERG which is a ruin a little way up the valley away from the Rhine
This old castle has also been a youth hostel for many years.
There are incredible views down to to the city of Bacharach, the Rhine river and the almost vertical slopes of wine grapes. It is lovely to sit outside with a coffee and cake and enjoy the vistas.
