Meet the legend! Best Malawian-owned safari/eco-camp in Liwonde!

点评：Shire Eco Safari Camp is owned and operated by Mr. Billy Mphande, his son Thandeka, and his daughter-in-law Manace. Mr. Mphande is a living legend. He seems to know everything about everything! With years of first-hand experience and knowledge about the local ecology, this family-owned business is sure to provide you with a magical time!
We stayed two nights at the camp and were the only guests the family was hosting, as they said they only take one group at a time to guarantee the guests have the best and individually catered experience. We sure did have an exceptional time and were spoiled with delicious food cooked by Manace, Thandeka’s partner, and the local staff. The campsite has all the necessities (we are pretty low-maintenance!), and we could sleep comfortably at night to the sounds of hippos grunting in the distance.
In the evening, we sat around an open fire with Thandeka, who shared with us what issues the local community currently faces. The stories of the local fisherman left a lasting impression on us, and I think all visitors would benefit from learning and understanding the realities of many folks in Malawi.
Despite our tight budget, we chose to do both the land and boat safaris, and we don’t regret the decision. As each safari has unique qualities, I would highly recommend visitors to do both. The land safari started early in the morning, and we had an adventurous time with Mr. Mphande as our guide. His stories and passion for his work and animals are infectious, perhaps something you won’t encounter in other upmarket safaris.
The boat tour, led by Thandeka, took place in the afternoon before sunset, and thanks to his expertise, we encountered many animals, such as elephants, hippos, and crocodiles up close.
Aside from the eco-camp, the Mphande family told us that they also work with the local community and provide education, activities, and food for children and people in the village. Their active engagement in supporting the local community, empowering the youth and women to become self-sufficient, and their commitment to running a sustainable camp are inspiring and something you probably won’t find in other camps.
Our stay at the eco shire camp was one of the highlights of our trip to Malawi. We are sending the family all our warm wishes, and we love to see this camp continue to grow!
