Oshinkoshin瀑布的点评
点评：There are 8 scenic wonders of Shiretoko (知床八景) – (1) Shiretoko Goko (Five) Lakes (2) Oshinkoshin Falls/Waterfall (3) Oronko Rock (4) Yuuhidai Observatory Deck (famous sunset) (5) Cape Puyuni (6) Furepe Falls (7) Shiretoko Pass (8) Kamuiwakka Waterfalls. As part of my family’s 10-day Hokkaido self-drive itinerary, we did two of the eight sights of Shiretoko: Shiretoko Goko (Five) Lakes and Oshinkoshin Waterfall. After Shiretoko Goko (Five) Lakes, we visited Oshinkoshin Falls/Waterfall (オシンコシンの滝, Oshinkoshin-no-taki) the next day where we spent about 30 minutes on a cloudy weekday mid-morning relaxing and soaking the “wet” ambiance of this magnificent and beautiful waterfall.
Getting there: we got here from our hotel in Utoro using Apple Maps and Google Maps on the Apple Car Play in our rental car. You will not miss this waterfall that is signposted “Oshinkoshin Falls オシンコシンの滝” (green letters on a white signboard) and sited next to an elongated parking area with more than 35 car park lots, a souvenir cum convenience store and toilets. Incidentally, there is an information board displaying the locations of the 8 scenic wonders of Shiretoko (知床八景) outside the souvenir cum convenience store. Depending on the direction of travel on National Route 334, Oshinkoshin Falls/Waterfall is on your right just before the last road tunnel towards Utoro or on your left after the first road tunnel about 5 minutes’ drive from Utoro. There is no car parking fee and no entrance fee to the Oshinkoshin Falls/Waterfall.
As for buses, you could go to Shari Bus Terminal which is next to JR Shiretoko Shari Station, get onto the Shari Bus going to Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal and alight at the Oshinkosin no taki bus stop after riding for about 40 minutes; alternatively, it is about 10 minutes ride to the Oshinkosin no taki bus stop from the Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal. Do check the bus departure schedules.
The Waterfall attraction: we walked away from the store in the direction of the tunnel and arrived at the place where there is a “two lane” horizontally wide step wooden log decorated stairs on a gentle elevation with a wood log divider in the middle. Looking up we saw the partially blocked Oshinkoshin Falls/Waterfall. Before taking the stairs, there is a brown Shiretoko National Park information board in Japanese and English about the waterfall. It mentions that the “Oshinkoshin” means “a place where many Ezo spruce grow” in the indigenous Ainu language. It goes on to mention that the nickname of the Oshikoshin Falls/Waterfall is “Soubi no Taki” meaning “beautiful forked waterfall”. Other sources also mentioned that Oshikoshin Falls/Waterfall is also named “Futabi no taki” meaning “twin beauty falls”. Reading all these information and compliments made us really excited to see the waterfall. During the climbing of the stairs/steps to about one third of the elevation, we reach a spot with a faded wooden signboard “知床八景オシンコシンの滝” that reiterates Oshinkoshin Falls/Waterfall is one of the eight scenic spots of Shiretoko and which presents a great spot for photograph of the signboard and the waterfall. After further walking, we finally came to a large, flat viewing deck or platform that allowed us to a “as close as you can get” view of the waterfall (about 10 metres away) at its height of about one third from the base.
Sources have stated that the Charassenai River is the source of Oshinkoshin Falls/Waterfall. Land terrain at the Charassenai River delta divides the Oshinkoshin Falls/Waterfall into two waterfalls or streams at the top. The right waterfall is further divided into two streams, each in turn has the water stream horizontally spread into no less than 9 mini-streams by the black basalt rocks. The left waterfall is horizontally divided or spread into no less than 10 mini-streams. Hence Oshikoshin Falls/Waterfall is a fan type of waterfall – its width is more than its height (perhaps about 30 metres flow distance, 10 metres top flow width and 45 metres bottom flow width). The right waterfall has more water flow than the left waterfall, which creates a wonderful asymmetrical contrast. As we were there in past mid-September, the amount of flowing water was not as much as during spring, but nevertheless, the gushing water still created an awesome sight to behold and to photograph! It also continuously produces a spray of water mist that wetted the floor of the viewing deck, so do be careful. Because of the width of the waterfall, I had to use 0.5x mode on my handphone and a wide angel lens on my DSLR camera to capture the entire waterfall (I also got silky water flow effect using slow shuttle speed) but at the same time I had to intermittently wiped off the water droplets on my devices. Look to your left and you could also take the photograph of the waterfall and the Sea of Okhotsk.
I enjoyed this waterfall because of the following:
(1) It is so accessible through stairways on a gentle slope/elevation and it took within 2 minutes of non-stop climbing to reach the viewing platform/deck; this is unlike some waterfalls which require walking on rough terrain such as stones and boulders or trekking and hiking for hours to reach the base of the waterfall
(2) It is one of the rare waterfalls in which the water flows directly into the sea (in this case Sea of Okhotsk) albeit after some 150 metres
(3) The sound of Mother Nature’s waterfall landing as well as the surrounding forest fauna somehow relaxed, soothed and refreshed our well-beings and our moods; in fact, some of the leaves had already started to turn brown welcoming the onset of autumn
(4) It let us experience the power, force and flow of Mother Nature;
(5) Peacefulness due to the very few visitors at the waterfall and the visitors generally do not stay longer than 10 minutes
When you are at the Shiretoko National Park and its vicinity, you must visit this unique, magnificent and easily accessible waterfall, and all the more since it is chosen as one of 100 Waterfalls of Japan (日本の滝百選, Nihon no taki hyakusen) in 1990 sponsored by the Japan Environment Agency and the Forestry Agency as well as one of the eight scenic sights of Shiretoko. Moreover, this waterfall is unique in each season – frozen during winter, huge amount of flowing water during spring and gradually lessens from summer to autumn.
