点评:At over 100 years old, this Former Hirosaki Kaikosha is a well preserved piece of history (preservation work still ongoing). I can't remember exactly what the admission fee was but I'm sure it wasn't over 500 yen. The gentleman on staff during my visit seemed very excited to see me and did his best to briefly show me around and try to explain stuff in English before having to return to his duties in the office and leaving me free to tour the building on my own.
The building is open for groups to have meetings in and there are many spots where you can view photos and military artifacts from World War II and earlier as well as photos of the extensive restoration work that has been done on the building so far. There are also a couple rooms/offices set up as they were back during WW2, though one was closed for some work on the day I visited.
Besides the history contained in the building, there are also many artistic and architectural features of interest both inside and out such as the stained glass windows, the metalwork design over the main entrance and even the gratings around the base of the foundation.
Fun Fact 1: this building is the model for the Hirosaki Branch of the Witch's Association in the Flying Witch manga by Chihiro Ishizuka.
Fun Fact 2: just across the street to the East is one of the houses used by famed Japanese author Osamu Dazai.
