点评:Like many, I have been driving past this Village for more years than I can remember, or agree too! Always seems that heading out of Adelaide to go east or heading back into Adelaide, there are time restraints. After spending some of the day in Murray Bridge, we had time so decided this was the day to finally enter the Tailem Bend Historical Village. What an eye opener it was.
Firstly, the sheer size of the village. Secondly the huge variety of buildings and all the additional furnishings, equipment, knick-knacks that make it come alive. Without a map, there could be a possibility of getting lost. Being in an older generation and having grandparents who were Aussie farmers, this was like walking into the past of memories. It is remarkable that the concept and dream was of one person who made this a reality. I was amazed at notices on buildings that said where they came from knowing that it would have been very costly and hard work to get buildings from point a to the village. For example – the church came from Wolsely, a small town in South Australia’s southeast near the Victorian border. The headstones were from the Payneham Cemetery in Adelaide. The Manor House from Bordertown. The Salvation Army Citadel was formerly the Wattlegrove School and was built in 1890.
Perhaps some of the displays need a good dusting, but in reality does it really matter? The Village gives a great idea of what late 1800s early 1990s buildings and life were like. We had allocated an hour to be there, but after nearly 3 hours another visit another time was desirable. Entrance fees may be considered on the high end but what is on offer is much more valuable in that it helps us have some idea of what early Australian pioneers and their immediate descendants would have experienced and learnt.
Thoroughly recommend the village to tourists. Do make sure you allocate a good slice of time to view this wonderful village properly.
