点评:I have been hearing about this place for some time from nature photography friends. I finally had the chance bringing along with me the hubby and daughter.
Green Cay is located pretty close to the Turnpike off of Atlantic Avenue. It is close to my other favorite nature escapes Arthur R. Marshall and Wakodahatchee Wetlands which I love equally as much but for different reasons. Like Wakodahatchee Green Cay is free. Unlike Wakodahatchee parking is plentiful at Green Cay. It is usually best to go to these places in the early morning or late in the day to see the most birds but I had to work with my families schedule so we arrived a little after 1 pm.
Apparently this place is very popular because when we arrived my daughter saw all of the people going in and wondered if an event was going on. It was just a normal day of nature lovers soaking in the wildlife. I saw many people going in with high end cameras that gave me a serious case of envy.
The first thing I noticed upon entering was the large nature center that was closed because it was Sunday. I believe I read that it is closed on Monday as well. It looked very nice and I look forward to checking it out on a future visit.
After snaking around the nature center it was on to the boardwalks. They were really lovely as they lifted us above the water and through the wetlands. From my elevated position I saw Common Moorhens, American Coots, Anhingas, Wood Storks, ducks, turtles, Ibis, Tri Colored Herons, an owl, and alligators. Oddly I didn't see any Great Blue Herons, a favorite bird of mine but might just have been the time of day I went. The two things I was most excited to see was the owl because I had never seen one in the wild before and a mother Common Moorhen feeding her two fuzzy babies. I love mommy birds and their babies, I could watch them for hours. The board walk twists and turns through a mile and a half of wetlands so you never know what amazing thing you will see around the corner.
I can't believe that I never knew that this place existed. I have been going to Arthur R. Marshall for years never knowing that this beautiful place was just up the road. Boynton Beach has an embarrassment of riches in the nature center category. I love leaving the hectic hustle and bustle of South Florida behind for a few hours when I am able to visit a nature center where the only sound I hear is the ripple of the water when I bird takes off in flight. I hope everyone comes out to support these nature centers. The Everglades are one of our most important resources. Everyone needs to be invested in protecting and preserving it for both a healthy planet and so future generations can enjoy it's beauty.
