点评:I arrived just after sunrise on an overcast September morning and had the place to myself. I spotted a platypus within minutes, just off the car park.
There's a gravel track that runs into the Warrawee reserve as well as a footpath down by the river. I followed along here and saw numerous platypi gliding along and ducking under the water.
One came quite close to the bank and had a good look at me before disappearing beneath the surface. I spent most of the time (two hours) in the area near the water lookout tower and saw a platypus about every five minutes or so. I'm not sure how many I saw- hard to tell individuals, but I would guess maybe two or three?
Listen for splashes or look for a V shape ripple, as their heads break the surface. It's especially obvious when they're going against the current. Looks a bit like a mini crocodile gliding along (but obviously a very different animal!) At one point I also noticed the reeds and bushes along the riverbank moving, as a platypus seemed to be accessing a burrow.
Stay as quiet as possible. At one point even the sound of my shoe moving on some gravel startled a platypus and it abruptly dove under the water.
One final tip- my GPS took me the wrong way and I ended up down a back road on private property. The car park is down the end of Shale Rd. Follow the Mersey River and you can't go wrong.
A fantastic location with abundant bird life too ( huge flock of Yellow-tailed black cockatoos). Highly recommended when in Northern Tasmania.
