点评:My mom and I took the Magical Christmas Tour with Experience Mex-Eco tours in December, 2023. It lived up to its name, because it was absolutely Magical! To explain...I am not a religious person, but I love Christmas lights and decorations, and I wanted to see more of the incredible Pueblos Magicos in Mexico, so this tour was exactly what I was looking for.
First, let me say that Mex-Eco does a fabulous job organizing tours. I have taken several tours with Ruth and Mex-Eco, and there are always hiccups on tours in Mexico. Ruth is always at home base making sure the issue gets resolved for a smooth tour for everyone. Noel was the guide for this tour (and has been for many of the tours my family and I have taken with Mex-Eco), and he is a consummate professional. He is full of knowledge about history, culture, food, music, plants, people, and the country of Mexico in general, but mostly he is just FUN. He always makes sure that everyone is safe, on time, and has an excellent trip. Felix was our driver, and again, he is an expert at making sure you can get through Mexico City safely but on time.
We started in Mexico City (Ciudad de México) and stayed in The Gran Hotel right on the Zocalo in the center of the city. The hotel is famous for being a location in the James Bond movie Spectre, but it is one of the grandest old hotels I have ever seen. I have attached a photo of the inside, but you really need to see their Christmas decorations in person. They also have a beautiful restaurant on the roof with incredible views of the Christmas decorations in the Zocalo. All of the buildings in the Zocalo (main square) are decorated with lights and lighted poinsettia flowers. the rest of the city is fully decorated as well. Take a walk to see the lights at El Palacio and Liverpool department stores too. I recommend dinner at Torre Latinoamerica, which rises above the city and provides views of all of the lights.
From there we visited the Pueblo Magico of Tepotzotlán. It is a charming town - beautifully decorated for Christmas, but the highlight for me was the church of San Francisco Javier. It must be the most ornate, gold-laden church I have ever seen! We also visited a Pulque farm/distillery and learned more about that delicious traditional drink.
The Pueblo Magico of Metepec was next, and the Museo del Barro (museum of clay) was only one of the three highlights for me. I included a photo of the magnificent clay sculptures at the museum. There is a fabulous artisan market where you can purchase pottery and other art as well. It was short trip to Toluca from there to visit the Cosmovitril Jardín Botanico - a massive indoor botanical garden covered in stain glass representing the cosmos. This is a must see!
Next was the Pueblo Magico of Tepotlán. Again, it's a charming town - well worth just visiting, but if you are adventurous (and have good shoes), hike to El Tepozteco. It was a temple to the god of the Pulque (which totally makes sense after drinking Pulque)! Just make sure you are ready for a serious hike! Luckily there are great bars at the bottom to celebrate your return :)
The pueblo Magico of Atlixco was crazy and fun.. I have never seen so many Christmas lights in one town. At night, the streets are filled with people enjoying the lights, music, and the largest Christmas village in Latin America. We were lucky enough to find a huge carnival with rides, ice skating, and a huge Ferris Wheel from where you can really see the whole city.
The Pueblo Magico of Chignahuapan is full of markets and stores where you can buy hand made and glass blown ornaments. it's a great place to go to buy Christmas presents because the ornaments are very unique.
So, if you love Christmas lights, decorations, and seeing some of Mexico's Pueblos Magicos, then this tour is definitely for you!
