点评:Whilst significantly smaller than Pompeii, Herculaneum (Ercolano scavi) is just as impressive and has the advantage of being far less crowded.
As with Pompeii there are plenty of organised tours but with a little effort you can prepare and plan your trip yourself, paying the entrance fee of EUR 13.00. If you have not had the time to research the site, there is a good bookshop at the entrance.
Wear flat shoes with a good tread and be prepared for some big steps up and down, up to about 0.5 metres/2 feet.
Trains to Ercolano scavi depart on the Circumvesuviana line from Naples Central Station. They often go from platform 2 or 3 and are on a stopping line, NOT the same line as Sorrento. Check carefully.
On arrival at Ercolano scavi station, walk out of the station towards the sea - the entrance to the Ercolano park is about 700 metres downhill.
At the time of this visit there was nowhere open on site for food or drink and almost everything was closed the the town on departure.
