Nestled within the picturesque town of Mougins, housed within a historic building, this unique museum celebrates women artists from the 19th Century to the present day. Greeted at the entrance with the mesmerising intensity of Tracey Emin, you walk into a world of female empowerment. This thoughtfully curated collection pays homage to artists and sculptors, some of whom, like François Gilot previously existed behind the legends of their more famous partners. Others are elevated beyond their traditionally male-dominated artistic movements, such as the surrealists, Leonor Fini and Leonora Carrington, whose alchemic paintings and sculpture radiate supernatural forces. Then you are absorbed into world of the Abstract Expressionists; Elaine De Kooning, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler's glorious visions of colour and life tell an alternative story to the well-known narrative of American masculinity. In the heart of the museum, amongst such luminaries as Frida Kahlo, Marina Abramović and Louise Bourgeois, Barbara Hepworth’s eternal Six Forms on a Circle, fires golden shards around the room and takes it rightful place as the spiritual core of this inspiring collection.
