点评:The Catherineberg Estate ruins is also known as the Hammer Farm. It is located 3 miles east of Cruz Bay, at the entrance of the National Park, and is easily reached by VITRAN public transportation or taxi. The taxi rates are standard at $12. The Ruins are actually a five minute walk north of Centerline Road on Highway 206.
The first structure which comes into view is the remains of the Factory (Boiling) House. This structure is badly in need of restoration, so avoid getting too close. The next structure, a short walk on the left, is the Horse Mill. Horses walked in a circular motion and the machinery that they were tied to would turn the rollers of the cane crushing machinery. The farm started operation in 1719, and the Horse Mill was built shortly afterward. Sugar production on the farm began in the 1730's. The Horse Mill was used regularly until the 1820's when the windmill was built. By the 1850's the Horse Mill was turned into the current water holding (Cistern) structure seen today.
The main section of the estate was the Windmill. It is almost four stories tall and had three huge rollers to crush the sugar cane. If you walk up the ramp and inside the windmill, the concrete grooves on the ground display the areas where the rollers once turned. The area underneath the windmill was used for storage. This is the only windmill of this design on St. Johns. After the emancipation of slavery in 1848, production was significantly reduced and ceased in the 1860's when cattle farming was done.
The Estate is also famous for being the headquarters of the slave rebellion which lasted between November 1733 to August 1734. The revolt was led by Breffu, who was a lady of the Akwamu tribe from Ghana. The Fortsberg Fort in Coral Bay was captured, and the revolt soon spread around the island. The Danes made two unsuccessful attempts at retaking the island, and eventually sought the help of 300 French soldiers from Martinique. Breffu and 23 of her companions killed themselves at Brown Bay, rather than surrender.
A nearby attraction is the L'Esperance Trail, a 10 minute walk east, where the L'Esperance ruins are a short walk down the trail from the main road.
