点评:Expect huge crowds! Not only will you see tourists from all over the world, but local day trippers too. We made the mistake of going on the Sunday before Coming of Age Day, and although a chilly and misty day it was jammed. Crowds all the way up the mountain and back, which is unusual because typically it thins out after the first stopping point. Lots of shrine commerce being done and long lines to buy votive items. Really an interesting cultural experience all around.
Things to consider: the climb is steep so if you're not in ok shape, do not attempt it. It is not in the least accessible to the mobility impaired. Most stair flights do not have handrails so you have to use the torii for support, but there are places with no torii and no handrails so have a helpful friend with you if you are not super sure-footed. Expect huge and pushy crowds unless you go really early or really late - - it's open 24 hours. Definitely pick an off time if you're looking for a spiritual experience with the shrines. Do not take photos of people worshipping or of most of the smaller shrines, even if you don't see a sign banning photos. There are snack and drink places along the way if you need a break. If you want to leave an offering, there are places to purchase one up the mountain away from the main shrine, and you can leave it at one of the smaller altars. It's too crowded down at the bottom. If you can't make it all the way up, about the halfway point there is a lovely overlook that is 100% worth the climb.
After you come back down you are in a residential neighborhood with tons of places to eat, but everyone has the same idea so expect long lines to get in to any of them. We beat the lunch crowd at 11:30 am but just barely.
Despite all of this, it is a must-do on your trip to Kyoto. Just don't try to take a cab or Uber, it's too crowded on the approach. Take the train - - two lines stop right there.
