点评:I‘m sorry to give this experience a one star rating and have never done that before but I think it is necessary to share my experience as I would have wanted to be better informed before going on this tour. I went on the tour one month ago on the 20th of October, there were three of us, me, my boyfriend and my aunt.
We are all from Iceland and are all taught to swim at a very young age so we are very comfortable in water and are used to difficult and even dangerous conditions in nature. I work as a guide and have tried almost all activities available in my country, snorkelling in ice-cold water, white water rafting in glacier rivers, ice climbing etc.
That being said I felt confident going on this white-water rafting tour, we looked at the reviews and saw that this was a well-established company with overwhelmingly positive reviews and decided to book the half day white water rafting tour.
All three of us had a traumatic experience on the tour and thought we were going to die. It was just us three on the raft and our guide and the raft was big enough for 12 people, then there were two safety kayakers and one safety raft.
The raft capsized 3 times, the first time in a grade 4 rapid, the current was very strong, but we were wearing life vests and helmets and we all shot up to the surface quickly after going into the river and we all came out laughing, it was fun...
Come next rapids, they are grade 5, I must admit I did not know that there was such a huge difference between the grades but anyway, we go down and paddle as fast as we can when our guide tells us to and ‘get down‘ when he tells us to and the boat immediately capsized in the worst rapid, we get sucked down into the current, I feel someone landing on top of me but all I could think about was getting air but the force of the water was stronger than the buoyancy of the life vest so it took a few seconds for me to shoot up to the surface and when I did a big wave landed on my face, at this point I have swallowed a ton of water and finally I float out of the worst of the rapids in total shock the safety boat and kayaks come and get me and I get pulled up on our own raft where my boyfriend and our guide are but we can’t see my aunt anywhere and a different kind of panic sets in.. a few seconds later we see her with a kayak all the way up in the river close by where we had all been sucked down. When she gets into the raft, she is bleeding from her foot as the toenail on her big toe has come loose and is hanging on only by the roots off the nail. My boyfriend was disoriented, and his head was hurting as he hit it on something in the water on his temple below the helmet.
The guide gets the first aid kit from the safety raft and puts bandages around my aunt’s toe and afterwards he tells us that we have on more grade 5 rapid to go through.
My aunt had been sucked down into a whirlpool in the rapids for a much longer time than me and my boyfriend and she almost passed out, she was injured and had we not all been in a state of shock this is where we would have and should have stopped the tour, not that we were ever given the option… At this point I knew that we were all lucky to have gotten out of that and there was not a possibility in my mind that things could get any worse, come the next rapids.
I assumed that our guide would lead us down a path in the river where the rapids wouldn’t be at their fiercest and maybe he tried that, but we end up in the tallest rapids and we obviously did not have the weight nor strength to row through them, the boat goes up 180° and then backwards back into the rapids and we end up getting stuck in between them, they throw the boat around for about 40 seconds, back and forth during which time we held on as hard as we could choosing every breath between splashes of water. As we are thrown around in the boat I feel my toe bend in an unnatural way but I could not let go off the rope as I did not want to end up in the water again, then I feel the floor rip underneath me and I start to get sucked through the floor of the boat I still held on to the rope even though the force was so strong that my shorts got sucked right off me, at this point I knew I couldn’t let go I could get stuck on my life vest, finally the boat capsized and I was upside down submerged with my feet through the floor, thankfully I didn’t get stuck on anything and my feet slid out of the boat but then the next battle for air began in the rapids.. The raft was torn in three places but it still floated and we finished the tour.
I have never hyperventilated before or had a panic attack, I’ve injured myself snowboarding and experienced a healthy amount of fear but never have I nor my travel companions experienced anything like this.
The crew was very positive about the whole thing, we were trying to ask if this was normal and they just kind of laughed it off maintaining the attitude that nothing had really gone wrong.
We are all alive and only sustained minor injuries, we went to a hospital where my foot was x-rayed, my big toe was broken, and I had a minor fracture in my left rib cage and my aunt’s toenail was looked at and she will hopefully grow a new one.
We do believe the good reviews on the companies site but our experience was nothing like that and after talking about this and watching the videos of the trip (the camera man was always located on the river bank next to all rapids) our conclusion is that we were simply too few on the raft to be able to paddle through rapids of this magnitude and that we should not have been so few in the raft or that we should have walked passed the grade five ones (like we did with the grade six ones, which were basically waterfalls).
In any case I hope this helps some people to make a more informed decision on whether they want to raft the grade five rapids in the White Nile.
