点评:I originally did this walk clockwise from Grange, going along the river Derwent south to Seatoller, then returning north along the open valley. But I wanted to repeat this classic lake District walk, which has such a good variety of landscape, and of course the rough steep scramble up to the summit of Castle Crag itself - it's a Wainwright walk.
Around 5 miles+. I'd allow 3-4 hours, perhaps 5 if you are strolling. Expect classic Lakeland fell views.
Anti-clockwise the walk climbs from Grange, goes up and down the crag, then along the valley to a tiny bridge at Seatoller, and returns to Grange by means of a lovely bridleway and footpath (sometimes right beside) the river Derwent. Through some lovely mature mixed woodlands, crossing many tiny fords and several footbridges. Excellent Lakeland scenery at every point on the walk. There is a cave created by disused quarry workings - and even a wee bit of via ferrata near the Youth hostel because the footpath runs out when you reach a rocky slab that slopes down to the river. Chains have been inserted into the rock here, and using some natural fissures in the rock face and holding the chain, it's not too difficult - unless you are very old or under 5. But even a fit 5-year old might manage this bit if careful and properly supervised - it's fun.
I took several pictures but there are lots online on google's mapping platform.
