点评:At the entrance to the old fishing port in Naoussa, you can see the remains of an ancient stone fortress which was built in the early 14th century to protect against pirates.
There’s not a lot left but you can walk out to it, along the sea wall. It’s not without risk as the sea wall is fairly narrow and waves can unexpectedly drench you.
Although everyone else made it safely across, I was unlucky and was soaked by a sudden large wave. Being halfway along, I didn’t have any option but to keep my footing steady and cop it. However I spent an unpleasant couple of hours afterwards, schlepping around in wet clothes and had to sit and wring my socks out.
Was it worth it? Not really. Once out there, an arched door leads into the centre of the tower. It’s kind of fun to look out through the other arches and imagine the days when people stood in the same spot, scanning the horizon for pirate ships. However there’s not much of the fortress left. Most of the walls are below sea level now and you can see pretty much all there is to see without needing to venture out there.
The port area as a whole is very picturesque and in addition to the fortress, there are colourful fishing boats, taverns and bars and the blue domed St Nicholas church.
